Why is masterbatch called plastic technology?
Masterbatches are concentrated mixtures obtained by distributing colors and additives into a polymer carrier by heat treatment and, in particular, high shear mixing extruders. The mixture is then cooled, cut and passed through a pelletizer to form granules. The production of masterbatches places high demands on the compounding process: the pigment and additive parts need to be completely homogeneously incorporated into the base polymer.
Types of masterbatches
White Masterbatches: White masterbatches have a wide range of applications, lamination, coating, piping, thermoforming, protective films, fibers as well as nonwovens, blow molding and injection molding. State-of-the-art production capabilities contain high-quality outdoor and indoor titanium dioxide (TiO2) grades. TiO2 provides opacity by reflecting light, which is possible because of its ability to scatter light. This is achieved through the refraction and diffraction of light as it travels through the titanium dioxide particles. If enough light passes through the surface, it reflects outward and the object appears opaque.
Advantages of white masterbatch: It has excellent dispersion and is suitable for injection and blow molding of thick and thin walls. Easy to integrate and food acceptable grade.
Black Masterbatch: A range of black masterbatches based on polyethylene, polypropylene and universal carrier systems. Specially selected carbon blacks offer a wide range of properties from high blackness, UV protection and food contact, adding more economical carbon blacks for unique coloration.
Advantages of black masterbatch: its excellent dispersion, durability in the face of extreme weather conditions. Black plastic masterbatches are food contact acceptable grades for easy flow/low viscosity products.
